Trat (ตราด sometimes also spelled Trad in English) is the Eastern most part of Thailand, bordering Cambodia. They are famous for fruit, and a few islands, especially Koh Chang that are popular tourist destinations.Thai phrase of the day: “If you haven’t eaten it, you haven’t arrived” (ถ้าไม่ได้กิน ถือว่า มาไม่ถึง)Key ingredients of the day:Naw sabparod (น่อสับปะรด) - pineapple crowns Sala (สละ) - salacca zalaccaFor breakfast though, still in Chanthaburi, we ate a dish that many say you have to eat in Chanthaburi, known as kuay teow moo liang.Kuay Teow Moo Ba Malee (ก๋วยเตี๋ยวหมูป้ามาลี) - Decent restaurant, nice quiet neighborhood location.Kuay teow moo liang (ก๋วยเตี๋ยวหมูเลียง)Kuay teow neua liang (ก๋วยเตี๋ยวเนื้อเลียง)Price - 30 THB ($0.96) per bowlKhao Gaeng San Toong (ข้าวแกงแสนตุ้งเจ๊มล (เจ้าเก่า) - The meal I was most looking forward to during this day though was a legendary Thai rice and curry restaurant serving Thai Trat style curry and rice. They didn’t have a huge selection of Thai curries, but what they did have was spectacular. Their deer curry with pineapple crowns, was the dish of the meal - amazing Thai food.Fish curry (แกงปลาขาไก่)Deer curry (แกงกวางหน่อสับปะรด)Green curry, king mackerel fish balls (แกงเขียวหวานลูกชิ้นปลาอินทรีย์)Mackerel (ปลาทูต้มเค็ม)Cockle pineapple curry (แกงหอยสับปะรด)Total price - 380 THB ($12.13)MUSIC: https://goo.gl/HwVjdoCAMERA GEAR I used to make this video (these are affiliate links):Main camera: http://amzn.to/2sV0XQOMain lens: http://amzn.to/2szLZNf2nd lens: http://amzn.to/2EjBeEgMicrophone: http://amzn.to/2rBKD3zDrone: http://amzn.to/2CrtAHzI would love to connect with you!Instagram: https://instagram.com/migrationologyFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/migrationologyT-shirts available now: https://migrationology.com/store/

►SUBSCRIBE for 2 new videos per week: http://bit.ly/MarkWiensSubscribe\n►T-shirts and caps available now: https://migrationology.com/store/\n\nLuang Prabang is an amazing historical city in Laos, and it also happens to be an amazing city for food. You’ll find an array of incredible Lao food to experience.\n\nMorning Market - One of the best places to get started eating Lao street food in Luang Prabang is the morning market. It’s low-key, relaxing, the vendors are incredibly friendly, and there’s so much delicious food to try. From wild grilled beehive to khao piak sen noodles, the food is so good, it’s hard to ever go anywhere else when you’re in Luang Prabang. The food highlight for me was the grilled honey comb, since it was so rare and unique. Additionally, you’ll have a blast checking out all the ingredient at the market. Here’s what I ate:\n\nGrilled beehive - 5,000 LAK ($0.60)\nMung bean cake - 5,000 LAK ($0.60) for 2\nNaem\nKhao gee - 5,000 LAK ($0.60) for 3\nNoodle rolls - 10,000 LAK ($1.20\nKhao piak sen - 15,000 LAK ($1.80) per bowl\n\nPhosi Market - One of the biggest markets in Luang Prabang is Phosi Market. Unfortunately there wasn’t much pre-cooked food when we went there in the middle of the day, but luckily we found some amazing food.\n\nSai oua - Sai oua is the northern Laos version of sausage, and it’s a life-changer. This stall served some of the best sausage, not only that I’ve had in Laos, but in the world. You’ll find sai oua all over Luang Prabang. Price - 10,000 LAK ($1.20) each\n\nSticky rice feast - I desperately wanted a Luang Prabang sticky rice meal for lunch, so eventually after walking around a little we found the perfect spot. She had a variety of different Lao food stews to choose from and they all look great. All the dishes were delicious, but the best Lao food of the meal for me was the bowl of aw bon (or bon) - made from taro leaves.\nTotal price - 40,000 LAK ($4.79)\n\nFinally, for dinner to finish off this Luang Prabang street food tour, we headed to the evening market, located perpendicular to the night market walking street. We ordered a Mekong fish and then some very interesting Lao dishes from the curry stall. The algae salad was particularly interesting and delicious.\nFish - 80,000 LAK ($9.58), farmed fish were considerably cheaper\nDinner total - 60,000 LAK ($7.18)\n\nIt was an amazing day exploring Lao street food in Luang Prabang. Luang Prabang is a food paradise.\n\nMUSIC: https://goo.gl/HwVjdo\n\n***CAMERA GEAR*** I used to make this video (these are affiliate links):\nMain camera: http://amzn.to/2sV0XQO\nMain lens: http://amzn.to/2szLZNf\n2nd lens: http://amzn.to/2EjBeEg\nMicrophone: http://amzn.to/2rBKD3z\nDrone: http://amzn.to/2CrtAHz\n\nI would love to connect with you!\nInstagram: https://instagram.com/migrationology\nFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/migrationology\n\nT-shirts available now: https://migrationology.com/store/

Xochimilco - STREET FOOD TOUR and BOAT RIDE on Canals of Mexico City!

►SUBSCRIBE for 2 new videos per week: http://bit.ly/MarkWiensSubscribe\n►Go check out Lalo: https://www.youtube.com/user/vpedoardo\n►Mexico City street food guide: https://goo.gl/Crr2Uv\n\nXochimilco is one of the most interesting cultural areas to visit when you’re in Mexico City. It was formerly a series of pre-Hispanic villages along Lake Xochimilco. Eventually Mexico City expanded and grew all the way to Xochimilco, and now it’s one of the boroughs of the city.\n\nWhat’s most remarkable about Xochimilco, and the reason most people go to visit is because of the extensive network of canals that form the framework of the area. Nowadays, you can rent the brightly colored boats and take a ride, eating and drinking along the way. I was there on a weekend evening, and it was a bit more rowdy and loud than I had wanted it to be, but it was still very fun. If you go during the daytime, you might have a more peaceful relaxing journey at Xochimilco.\n\nHere’s what Lalo (https://www.youtube.com/user/vpedoardo) and I did on our short visit:\n\nMercado de Xochimilco - This is the main market of Xochimilco, and one of the best places to get started eating traditional Mexican food when you visit Xochimilco. At the entrance of the market you’ll find rows of vendors selling home-cooked foods. Don’t miss them, they are incredible delicious. Along with rare types of tlayudas, the highlight for me was the chicken tostada which blew me away.\n\nHere’s the list of everything we ate, but really you can just walk around, see what looks good, and try it:\n\nTlacoyo - 12 MXN ($0.65) each\nTostada - 15 MXN ($0.81) each\nTaco - 5 MXN ($0.27) each\nJamaica - 10 MXN ($0.54)\nCarnitas - 20 MXN ($1.08) each\n\nAfter eating, we walked over to the boat pier. And unfortunately we were running a little late on time and it was a race against time and daylight, but we made it to the pier. Lalo talked to the boat crews, and we finally arranged a boat. The cost was a little higher than what it would normally be for locals, but unfortunately, that’s what it came down to.\nBoat hire - 850 MXN ($45.91)\n\nHope you enjoyed this tour of Xochimilco. The colorful boats are impressive to see, and it’s hard to believe you’re in Mexico City when you’re both at the relaxed Xochimilco Market, and gliding along the canals.\n\nThanks again to Lalo for coming along. So today we had the opportunity to visit a village in Trat, forage for a few ingredients, and cook some amazing, very local regional specialities.Baan Huai Raeng (บ้านห้วยแร้ง) - This is a beautiful tropical village, and they also offer home-stays and cultural tourism. I contacted them to arrange a food experience, and I think they did a fantastic job.Khao haw kab mak (ข้าวห่อกาบหมาก) - This is the first dish that Aunty made, a mix of fried rice and ingredients all within a banana leaf and another outer wrapper. It was a delicious mix, soothing in the morning.Khanom jeen sao nam (ขนมจีนซาวน้ำ) - This wasn’t planned at all, but Uncle was planning for another group and decided to make a dish for all of us to eat - khanom jeen sao nam. This is a Royal Thai food dish, that’s not common to find, and it was delicious.HEre are the two main regional Thai food dishes we cooked:Sour curry with local vine called sandan (แกงส้มใบสันดาน) - I still can’t find the name in English of the local vine, and they made a sour curry with fish and shrimp. Awesome dish.Gaeng kradom (แกงกระดอม) - The little fruit is called Gymnopetalum chinense in English and it’s bitter tasting. They made a curry with shrimp and curry paste. It was awesome, I loved the bitterness.Interesting ingredients:Chamuang (ชมวง) - gacinia cowaBai sandan (ใบสันดาน) - local vineKradom (กระดอม) - Gymnopetalum chinenseIt was a fantastic day in Trat, exploring regional Thai food and unique dishes and ingredients in the village!MUSIC: https://goo.gl/HwVjdoCAMERA GEAR I used to make this video (these are affiliate links):Main camera: http://amzn.to/2sV0XQOMain lens: http://amzn.to/2szLZNf2nd lens: http://amzn.to/2EjBeEgMicrophone: http://amzn.to/2rBKD3zDrone: http://amzn.to/2CrtAHzI would love to connect with you!Instagram: https://instagram.com/migrationologyFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/migrationologyT-shirts available now: https://migrationology.com/store/

Oaxacan Mole Negro - THE MOST MYSTERIOUS Mexican Food in Oaxaca Village, Mexico!

Oaxacan Mole Negro - THE MOST MYSTERIOUS Mexican Food in Oaxaca Village, Mexico!

Mole negro is one of the most amazing Mexican foods!\n►SUBSCRIBE for 2 new videos per week: http://bit.ly/MarkWiensSubscribe\n►T-shirts available now: https://migrationology.com/store/\n\nCooking Oaxacan mole negro from scratch was one of the best food and cultural experiences I’ve ever had. On top of that, we didn’t really know what we were going to do when we set off in the morning… but things worked out for the best. Thank you to Javier and his family for inviting us into their home to cook amazing Oaxacan food!\n\nSo in the morning the plan was\nRent a van for the day\nDrive to a village\nFind a market\nAsk a nice Grandmother or Aunty to cook us some authentic Oaxacan mole negro\n\nNow, mole negro is one of the most complex and mysterious of all the Oaxacan Mexican food dishes. There’s such a huge mix of random ingredients in the dish, and no one knows for sure how it was invented or how it came about - there are only legends.\n\nAfter renting a van for the day, our driver Javier came to pick us up and we started talking with him to see if he knew anyone that would make us Oaxacan mole negro from scratch. He called his Mom, and she agreed!\n\nWe picked up Mom in a place called Tlacolula de Matamoros, and we went straight to the market to buy all the ingredients for mole negro. Tlacolula de Matamoros is a predominantly Zapotec town, an Indigenous pre-Columbian civilization from the Valley of Oaxaca\n\nWe got back to the house and started preparing all the ingredients. Let me tell you, mole negro has to be one of the most complex and mysterious of all Mexican food. It includes so many random and seemingly odd ingredients. It was a lot of fun to learn how to make it.\n\nThe end result of the Oaxacan mole negro, was supreme. The sauce was so rich, chocolatey, and you could taste all the random ingredients in it - the nuts and dried fruit. It’s deliciously complex.\n\nMole was amazing, and having the chance to hang out in a traditional Oaxacan village to cook was priceless.\n\nMUSIC: https://www.audionetwork.com/\n\n***CAMERA GEAR*** I used to make this video (these are affiliate links):\nMain camera: http://amzn.to/2sV0XQO\nMain lens: http://amzn.to/2szLZNf\n2nd lens: http://amzn.to/2EjBeEg\nMicrophone: http://amzn.to/2rBKD3z\nDrone: http://amzn.to/2CrtAHz\n\nI would love to connect with you!\nInstagram: https://instagram.com/migrationology\nFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/migrationology\n\nT-shirts available now: https://migrationology.com/store/

►Get a free 30 day trial for Audible at http://audible.com/markwiens or text ‘markwiens’ to 500-500\n\n►Subscribe for 2 new videos per week: http://bit.ly/MarkWiensSubscribe\n\nThank you to Audible for sponsoring this video. Latest audiobook I listed to was called “The Language of Food: A Linguist Reads the Menu.”\n\nDuring my trip to Vientiane, we decided to take a day trip to a small village called Ban Hatkai located right on the outskirts of Phou Khao Khouay National Bio-Diversity Conservation Area in Laos. The main goal of the trip was to visit the village and especially learn about local Lao Lum food (ລາວລຸ່ມ)\n\nIt was about a 2 hour drive to get there, and we stopped a few minutes outside of Vientiane first to visit a market and buy some ingredients. But the best thing about markets is that there’s always also some pre-cooked food available - and for breakfast in Laos, that means sticky rice and grilled meat! We got some quail and grilled dried buffalo lungs, both of which were delicious.\n\nBan Hatkhai - Ban Hatkai is a beautiful quiet village, and we arrived to the home, a beautiful wooden Laos traditional home. She immediately got started cooking, chopping all the vegetables and herbs, and steaming the sticky rice.\n\nKoi paa - Lao fish mixed dish - For me this was the highlight of our meal. The fish was sliced thin, flash blanched, mixed with all sorts of fresh herbs, and toasted sticky rice powder, and seasoned with fish sauce.\n\nJaew - Any type of Lao dip - She made both an eggplant and a tomato jaew, both of which were delicious to eat with vegetables.\n\nThe best part of this meal and Lao food experience was all of us sitting down to eat together, sitting around a colorful spread of Lao food. The food was heavy on the vegetables and herbs, nutritious, and delicious.\n\nAgain, thank you to Audible for sponsoring this video.\n\n***CAMERA GEAR*** I used to make this video (these are affiliate links):\nMain camera: http://amzn.to/2sV0XQO\nMain lens: http://amzn.to/2szLZNf\n2nd lens: http://amzn.to/2EjBeEg\nMicrophone: http://amzn.to/2rBKD3z\nDrone: http://amzn.to/2CrtAHz\n\nI would love to connect with you!\nInstagram: https://instagram.com/migrationology\nFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/migrationology\n\nT-shirts available now: https://migrationology.com/store/

One of the best things to do in Luang Prabang is visit Kuang Si Waterfalls, a gorgeous jungle falls that cascades with sparkling turquoise water.\n\nBefore went to the waterfalls we first stopped for breakfast to eat Laos sandwiches, called khao gee.\nTotal price - 55,000 LAK ($6.61)\n\nKuang Si Waterfall - It’s a must visit when you’re in Luang Prabang, but our plan was to go as early as possible and beat the main crowd. And it worked. We had breakfast and continued on to the falls - it takes about 45 minutes or so to drive there. Kuang Si Waterfalls are absolutely spectacular, but they can get extremely busy in the afternoon.\nPrice - 20,000 LAK ($2.40) per person\n\nLunch at Laos goat restaurant - For lunch we wanted to try something a little different, and we asked out driver to take us to a goat restaurant. Goat is typically eaten in the evening in Laos, but this place happened to be open for lunch. We ordered some grilled goat and the highlight for both Joel and I was their goat bile soup - yes it looked and tasted a little like grass, but it was amazing.\nTotal price - 290,000 LAK ($34.87)\n\nIt was another fantastic day in Laos, enjoying the beauty of Luang Prabang.\n\nThank you for watching!\n\nMUSIC: https://goo.gl/HwVjdo\n\n***CAMERA GEAR*** I used to make this video (these are affiliate links):\nMain camera: http://amzn.to/2sV0XQO\nMain lens: http://amzn.to/2szLZNf\n2nd lens: http://amzn.to/2EjBeEg\nMicrophone: http://amzn.to/2rBKD3z\nDrone: http://amzn.to/2CrtAHz\n\nI would love to connect with you!\nInstagram: https://instagram.com/migrationology\nFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/migrationology\n\nT-shirts available now: https://migrationology.com/store/

GOURMET French Food in Laos - BUFFALO STEAK TARTARE at L'Elephant in Luang Prabang!

GOURMET French Food in Laos - BUFFALO STEAK TARTARE at L'Elephant in Luang Prabang!

►SUBSCRIBE for 2 new videos per week: http://bit.ly/MarkWiensSubscribe\n►T-shirts and caps available now: https://migrationology.com/store/\n\nLaos has a long history with France, and for that reason, you’ll find a lot of French food restaurants throughout the main cities like Vientiane and Luang Prabang. In Luang Prabang, L'Elephant Restaurant is one of the most renowned high end French restaurants in the city.\n\nWhat I liked and the reason I wanted to try L'Elephant Restaurant when I was in Luang Prabang is mainly because they use mostly local Laos ingredients, but French cooking techniques. So I made a reservation.\n\nL'Elephant Restaurant - Located in a classic yellow building just a few steps from the Mekong River, L'Elephant Restaurant is a beautiful restaurant. They do have both French food and Lao food on their menu, but I decided to keep the dishes pretty French and the ingredients Laos.\n\nBuffalo steak tartare - This was the first dish I for sure was going to order, and I think it’s one of their best dishes. The buffalo was chopped, mixed with egg, pickles, and capers. It was every bit as good as I thought it was going to be.\n\nWild boar terrine - This was something I sort of ordered and didn’t know what it was. A terrine is a kind of meat loaf, sort of like pate but different. This one was seasoned with some cognac as well. It was ok, but not my favorite dish of the meal.\n\nChef salad - The chef salad at L'Elephant Restaurant is amazing, full of their garden grown vegetables.\n\nFlemish buffalo carbonade with Beerlao - Seeing that Beerlao was used in this dish, I had to try it out. The stew was excellent, with just a scent of beerlao - I think.\n \nMekong fish stew - Finally the last French food we tried was the Mekong fish stew - nuggets of Mekong fish, in a mustard butter white sauce. The fish melted in your mouth, it was so good.\n\nL'Elephant Restaurant is an elegant French food restaurant in Luang Prabang, Laos. I thought the dishes could have been a little bigger, but the taste and quality were both excellent.\n\nTotal price - 690,000 LAK ($82.61)\n\nMUSIC: https://goo.gl/HwVjdo\n\n***CAMERA GEAR*** I used to make this video (these are affiliate links):\nMain camera: http://amzn.to/2sV0XQO\nMain lens: http://amzn.to/2szLZNf\n2nd lens: http://amzn.to/2EjBeEg\nMicrophone: http://amzn.to/2rBKD3z\nDrone: http://amzn.to/2CrtAHz\n\nI would love to connect with you!\nInstagram: https://instagram.com/migrationology\nFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/migrationology\n\nT-shirts available now: https://migrationology.com/store/
